The 'Hunter Arms Co. Makers' mark appears on pre-1913 guns and unfortunately, some serial numbers are missing from the remaining Hunter Arms records. It should be a F (lowest) grade made about 1899. Does it have Twist or 'Royal Steel' barrels? Please check the 'Shotguns', 'FAQ', and 'Photo Trail' on the Home Page for more information. Most lower grade guns were part of a large lot ordered by a local or regional hardware or sporting goods store, but it is possible that a research letter might list your grandfather as the original purchaser http://www.lcsmith.org/shotguns/researchdivision.html And thank you for your service to our country Sir.
