My Wire-Haired Pointing Griffon took me and my 1905 L.C.Smith to South Dakota last week to hunt pheasants near MURDO. Since she is a great pointer and retreiver, she gets invited every year, and usually takes me along.
The Elsie is a Buck Hamlin restoration 12 gauge 0 grade bored LM & F with 30" barrels, non-ejector. Actually, there were several times I wished it did have ejectors, as numerous roosters flushed at the end of a drive. Mostly we group hunted cane sourghum, milo, and CRP. There is/was still much unharvested corn standing.
There are an abundance of wild birds in South Dakota this year. Our group limited every day in 3 to 4 hours, and also bagged a few prairie chickens. We saw several hundred birds each day. In the evening, on a short drive on the back roads, we would see over a hundred pheasants feeding near the road.
If you have any interest in hunting wild pheasants, there are plenty remaining in South Dakota, and most guides still have some open dates.
