What do I Have Here II? Archived Message

First off, I want to thank you all. Not only for your kind information on my first post about my first L.C. Smith, but for the wealth of information found in this board and the association site. From the Picture Trail to the FAQ, my head is swimming with what I have learned.
I am just now understanding what Dr. Drew was saying about a regular sized 5-pin. This old gun seems like something out of the norm, but I don’t know how far out of the norm. If any of you have seen another one of these, can I ask where that was? Any info on this variation would be greatly appreciated as well (article citations, records from the company, etc).
I am going to send off to Cody for a letter, maybe they can shed some light.

I honestly intended to buy an old field grade and fix her up myself (I hear you smiths groaning!). I inherited grandpa’s bluing tanks (good cast iron) and I grew up carding barrels for him in his shop. But if this gun is some one-off it will be worth a lot if left alone or restored by a professional, I suppose. Advice on what I should be done next with her is welcome also.

Here is an updated picture album with the 5-pins and a ruler (lest you think me insane):
