When you support the barrels by the lump, and tap them somewhere around the middle, you are essentially creating a wind chime. The note will be largely determined by the length of the barrels. The lenth of time the chime rings (sustain) will be determined largely by how well all the pieces are attached to each other. It is possible to have a poor solder joint near one of the two vibration nodes, and still obtain good sustain. For that reason, a good sounding note should be considered a necessary but not sufficient indication of barrel integrity.
