Assuming frame type, size, and barrel flats are the same, I don't believe it's overly difficult for a good gunsmith to aftermarket fit a set of barrels from one Smith gun to another. I personally know that Buck Hamlin has done so many times; and also that he won't alter the serial number on the odd set of barrels unless requested to do so by the customer. I've also seen some barrel work done by Buck; and you are right, when smiths of his caliber fit a set of barrels it will be impossible to tell they were not factory fitted. As FYI, I think Brother Russ's comments about matching Smith parts was more directed to buttstock fitting than barrels.
