Paul, It's nice to do the re-checkering before the finish is put on, but then you run the chance of filling in the checkering with finish. Most of the time it is done after the finish is applied. I use a toothbrush and apply the finish into the checkering with it, just rub it back and forth into the checkering. Give it a few coats to help "water proof" it.
