ID my great grandfathers LC SMITH Archived Message

Good morning ELSIE fans. I recently inherited my great grandfathers(?) LC SMITH and would like some help ID ing her. The Serial #31924 along with the number 1 is stamped on the forearm. The receiver has the same Serial # (without the numb er 1) along with Patent Dates Mar 83, July 86 and Oct. 86. Is this an 1890 model year shotgun? Does the Number 1 on the forearm mean it is one level up from Field Grade? Is the barrel made of Damascus Steel? I plan on gently "cleaning her up" following the guide lines on this website but she looks quite good as she is. The only real problem I see is the stock has been cut about 1 1/2" and I have no butt plate (a Red Head Pad was on it). Thanks to all who can help...your consideration is much appreciated. Regards: Keith Campbell
