I have seen and worked on a few "sweet elsies" with this finish/lack of finish. It seems to be a type of nickel plating. I'm sure Ken saw lots of similar finishes at Colt as it was very popular for rust resistance. It is a true plating process. The "Hunterization" process seems to be more of a phosphate/parkerizing finish than anything else, probably secondary to the WWII effort by the Hunter Arms Co. Best, Dr. Bill
