As you know Destry, the L.C. Smith shotgun design started with patents issued to W.H. Baker from 1865-1880, and was improved (and remained essentially unchanged excepting the Long Range Wild Fowl) with patents issued to Alexander Brown 1880-1886, the most important of which was the rib extension "Double Cross-Locking Rotary Bolt" patent of March 20, 1883.
Please provide some 'literature' documenting a 1 1/4 oz 3 3/4 dram 12g load available commercially in, oh, say 1884 (the year the improved L.C. Smith hammer gun was introduced.)

As has been discussed at length, the 'issue' with the Smith design is not the strength of the locking mechanism, since we all know 'The Longer You Shoot a Smith Gun the Tighter It Gets.' The problem is relatively little wood surface area at the head of the stock

All those 'Long Cracked' Smith guns out there should speak convincingly, and "Smith Guns Are Convincing Guns."
