Lloyd, I'd say you are right. The hammer/sear edges/interface were hardened at the factory, but years of wear smooth the edges, hence easy let off. Fact to remember, rounded edges of the sear/hammer interface make for "light/easy" triggers, sharp edges increase "hardness" of trigger pull. Further the geometry of the triggers/locks/hammer/sear relationship change as the stock ages/cracks/compresses secondary to oil saturation,etc. Remember many of these guns are well over 50-75 years old-how does the average person "wear" at 65-70?
