Long shells in short chambers are never a safe practice despite the fact that it has been done before.Maney older Smith guns seem have short chambers and are on the tight side by todays standards.Maney also have cracked stocks as a result.I have had good results by cutting the chambers and forcing cones longer.This seems to be a big help.
