Tom, I know you said it is unfired, but it seems to be that this gun was taken apart possibly a few times with out it being re-cocked and put a lot of tension on the "j" spring causing it to bend. If the forend is off, or if you have to take it off, make sure that the gun is re-cocked, take the forend off and look at the "j" spring and see if it is straight and doesn't have a bend to it. If it is bent, it will have to be straightened. Let us know.
