The attached picture shows Damascus barrels above and Twist barrels below. The Damacus barrels have a whorl pattern to them kind of like fingerprints. Twist barrels are kind of candycane like. These composite barrels were made by hammer welding alternating strips of iron and steel together into ribbons, then wraping and hammer welding the ribbons around a mandrel to form the barrel tube. To get the Damascus pattern the ribbons were twisted as they were wrapped around the mandrel. When the barrels were finished the iron and steel took different coloring giving the pattern instead of the plain blue of a homogeneous steel tube. In their day they were considered superior to a plain steel tube.
