In a typical double trigger set-up, the front trigger fires the right barrel and the back trigger fires the left side. It is also common for the right barrel to have a more open choke, as the target is thought to be closer for the first shot (fired by the front trigger); and the left barrel to have tighter chokes for what would be a longer shot in event of a miss or chance at a pair. However, all Smith guns were bored full choke in both barrels unless the person/company placing the order specified guns choked otherwise.
Often guns were "reverse" choked according to the intended purpose. For instance, when shooting driven birds, the shooter often preferred the right barrel tigher choked than the left because his first shot at an incomer would be further away than his second shot at a bird passing overhead. Southpaws would typically order the same choke set up as a righthanded shooter (right barrel-front trigger-with less choke than the left barrel-rear trigger); but there was one difference, and the way to identify a double gun built for a left handed shooter is to examine the triggers themselves; those for southpaws will have the trigger curl bent to the left side of the trigger guard. Such guns are rare; and, if you ever see one, you will instantly realize the difference between left and right-handed triggers (which problem was eliminated with the advent of the single trigger).
