Did some sort of change occur in 1896?
I have three hammer guns from this period with identical features,
Ser #'s
52,7XX.(12ga)
55,4XX (16ga)
57,3XX (16ga)
The 12ga, 52,7XX has 1896 roll stamped on the locks under the LC Smith roll stamp and also, interestingly, has fluid steel barrels.
I have seen other hammerguns with the 1896 roll stamp, but never hammerless.
All three guns have similar locks.
