My guess is that this modification is after-market. A modification like is seen on your gun was sometimes done by a shooter to achieve a better stock-to-cheek-weld when mounting the gun. I've actually owned such a gun; and in my opinion an incredible piece of stock wood was ruined in the process. Most I've seen were a tad more esthetic as regards appearance; so I certainly wouldn't fault you for attempting to improve the appearance. It'd be very difficult to match the grain with a patch to the grain of the wood in the stock, but there are those who can do it! The other alternative would be to leave the stock as it has survived; but I admit this modification would be a bit hard to look at while sitting in a dove blind. On the other hand, just imagine all the conversations this oddity will stimulate amongst shooters at the range or in the club house; give you lots of opportunity to make new friend!
