Unless you specifically wanted to save the original wood; reshape the BT to a splinter, finish and recut the correct checkering pattern, you have plenty of wood to work with. If your fore BT iron has the reinforcing rod (should if factory); you can elect not to reinstall the rod, as it's not necessary for a splinter forend. If you chose to retain the rod; then you'll need to devise a creative way to finish the forend tip if you hope to retain the correct "look" of an LC Smith splinter.
