There are three things that you can look at that can cause a HOT not to function right, one is the lock plate connecting screw that goes through the lock plate. That screw is "timed" from the factory and should be flush on the right side plate. I have seen it be 1/2 turn off and the HOT not function. Since you stated it is doubling, it could be the screw under the top lever. This screw is also "timed" and one turn too much and it pulls the trigger plate up and could cause the sears to rest on the trigger plate and then double when fired. I would back that screw out one full turn and then try it.
This screw is contoured to the shape of the top tang and has to be aligned that way.
If that doesn't work then you will have to ship it out to someone mentioned but not to the gunsmith that said it might be a sear spring.
