Smith stocks crack because of recoil (and IMHO inadequate wood to absorb recoil at the head of the stock), not pressure.
Actions loosen from the cumulative effect of both.
As Bro. David said, it is important to know the chamber length, and use shells for which the gun was designed.
It would be wise to have a Smith specialist check the stock for cracks before use.
If your gun has not been glasbedded, in light of the age of the wood, it would be reasonable to limit your 16g loads to 7/8 oz. at 1200 fps.
