PE 5479 actually has the later style rectangular escutcheon and the second type-ejectors. I have previously written about this gun and speculated about how this might have occurred in an article in the Summer, 2021, volume of the LCSCA Journal. Summarizing, it is plausible that the gun originally had the first-type ejectors or an early version of the second-type and that the ejectors failed at some point. If such occurred, it would not have been uncommon for the gun to be returned to the factory for repair or replacement. If such occurred in the 1930's, a rectangular escutcheon could have been used (on a new forend) because that was the factory standard at the time. Admittedly, this is speculation as I point out in the article.
