I suspect that WW1 caused a lot of American gun factories to retool and promoted mass production throughout the industry.
Personally, I think America's best guns were made in the horse and buggy days, prior to the war. Once people adopted the automobile, they got obsessed with speed and efficiency while beauty and craftsmanship started falling by the wayside.
Interesting parallels in other production work like home building and agriculture.
