Butt stock checkering

I have a pre-1913, LC Smith No.2 grade, manufactured in 1903, with no signs of ever having any checkering on either the butt stock or forend. All the pictures that I've seen of even lower grade shotguns, seem to all have checkering. I know the stock is original as the serial number is clearly stamped into the wood under the trigger guard, and the wood to metal finish seems excellent and not sanded or refinished. Just wondering if an uncheckered stock was an option, or how common that was on a No.2 finished shotgun.
