Glenn: be sure and fully open the gun to cock the hammers before removing the forend, and check out the FAQ and Shotguns sections on the Home Page for LOTS of information, including the date of manufacture.
A No. 3 would likely have 2 birds within an oval on the lockplate, and should have the SN engraved on the trigger guard extension.
Also consider a Research Letter. A No. 3 might have been special ordered by a family member. How cool would that be?
