In the 1920s when a shotgun did not pass the final inspection because of a cosmetic flaw, the Hunter Arms Company marked them 'SECOND' and sold them at a reduced price. The safety and shooting qualities were not compromised.
I've seen three of them. On one, the case hardening was irregular likely due to incomplete degreasing at the start of the process. When another showed up at the Southern a few years ago, several of us looked at it very closely and could not find a flaw. It had been heavily used, and the wear could have masked the original flaw.
