As David states it will certainly work. You will have to size it down with a rasp for a 16ga though. If you have your original stock and a caliper it shouldn't be to tough.
I used a half grip off a 12ga "00" to make a straight hand on a 16ga "0E" (R frames) last winter. Lots of labor but very rewarding when completed.
