Jim is correct regarding serial numbers on new parts. I have examined an 1885 C Grade Syracuse era Smith 10-gauge hammer gun; the owner of which sent the barrels only to Hunter sometime after 1907 for a bit of factory work. Hunter took those barrels and modified them so that they became ejector barrels; then fitted them to a new Grade 2E frame with the optional Hunter One-trigger. The old Syracuse assigned serial number was stamped onto the new frame, 16XXX; and the new Grade assignment, 2E, stamped over the still visible "C" Grade designation on the barrel flats. Additionally, the original Syracuse address was left atop the old hammer gun barrel set; leaving no confusion regarding their heritage.
