Thanks for your answer on the butt plate.
I know there are discrepancies in "The Legend Lives" , but since it is the first book that gives many of us an idea of what to look for. On page 130 it shows this butt plate and describes it as such "the very earliest of these guns has the highly ornate and distinctive double dog butt plate". It happens to be on a Variation One A2.
I believe that all of the butt plates used on Syracuse and Fulton guns were made by someone else, but naturally the ones with L.C. Smith on them would only be used on such guns.
