As I posted in the "Quiz", gun arrived and I was able to look at it. Decided to get it, because it had things that I haven't seen.
Gun did weigh 8 lbs. 15 ozs. exactly. Couldn't figure out why until I removed the but plate. Someone drilled a 3/4" hole and filled it with lead. I don't know how far it goes, but I imagine at least a lbs. worth.
Gun does have a nice piece of wood and I took the trigger guard off and the serial number matches. The forend wood looks the same but there was no serial number and the wood looked newer. Someone went through a lot of work to make the forend period looking with the ebony snabble-like tip.
I think I am going to get a letter for this gun, and hopefully it might say that this gun was ordered with these fancy barrels. Dr. Drew said they were three-rod Oxford. In looking at the different Damascus on page 377 of "The Legend Lives" they look like Finest Damascus.
The gun does have the early convex lumps similar to the Syracuse guns, but not as beefy. Also has the two pointing setters butt plate, which I haven't seen but once before. Bores are nice and shiny and are .728 and .731.
Hopefully I will get a chance to pattern it and maybe try it for some doves.
