Dan, I don't think any of it is secret or he wouldn't have told me. When you sand in with the Slackum, use just barley enough to keep the paper(600grit) from plugging up -- work the "gravy" into the pores with your finger tips one small area at a time -- not exactly rubbing, but sort of packing it into the wood, and stay at it until it feels almost dry. Ours looked like an awful mess for a while, but finally did fill, and after that it started to work like magic with the rubbing oil. The test scraps were good english walnut -- real tight grained, but the stock itself was full of big pores.
Will definatly use it again, but the next time will be on a Turkish blank we got from Bill Dowtin that is about as heavy and hard as a frozen brick -- on figured black -- Well, I think there are better ways.
