Mornin' David;
No, the stock isn't factory, -- just a nice blank at a good price, as the layout up through the wrist could have been better. (the wave in the grain is behind any inletting and tang screw)
To each his own, but I always figured that if wood isn't filled, it isn't finished -- especially on a gun stock, and this one was open as a sponge back in the curl. No intention of making it look original -- Just fluffing up an old 00 grade into a pretty shooter.
Have tried Danish Oil and the rubbing varnishes, etc. on other kinds of woodworking, but not on gunstocks. This Slackum seems to have the dryer in the rubbing oil -- Played around with it on some scraps, and it didn't set up until it was rubbed out with the oil.
Good luck on the box lock stock -- More to that wood than meets the eye.
Have a good one;
Bill Kraft
P.S.. This one is far from being done -- Will checker it next and then go back to rubbing on it.
