He was the first person to teach me anything about this sport. I still remember the smell of the tiny gym he had in Okotoks (the old pharmacy). You walked in and everything seemed like a regular gym, then you started to notice all the trophies and awards on the walls.
If that didn't do it for you, all you had to do was walk into the back room. That's where the big boys played. That was the first time I had ever seen a monolift (nevermind three in a row). It was the first time anyone had ever put chains on my bar, and it was the first time I was ever forced into a squat suit and guided under a bar that I was terrified to lift. And that back room was the place where I hit a lot of personal records, and developed my love for this sport.
Thank you Bruce for giving me my start into powerlifting. When I heard that you were coming to the meet on Saturday I was excited because I wanted to thank you in person. I was looking forward to walking up to you and shaking your hand. I trained with you for only a short time, and I'm sure you wouldn't recognise me today, but I truly wanted to let you know how grateful I was to have been a part of your gym.
Rest in Peace Bruce, and thank you.
