Posted by chuck sparnecht Thanks for the information about Joe. I only wish I had found a way to look him up before he passed. Joe was a big influence in my life, letting me part of his pit crew when I was just 13 years old. I just changed tires, served as a gofer and mainly got in the way. I knew those cars really well - in fact I just responded to an old message of yours on this board last night - the first time I had found it. My response had been about the number 1 and 1 1/2. The car that went to Trenton was actually an F-85 Buick and was the Ace of Spades that Al DeAngelo drove at Islip. Joe borrowed it for that race and after some modifications and a new paint job, it competed as the number 1. I remember spending some nights at Complete Auto working on that changeover as well as spending other times there "hanging out" and doing the few things I knew how to do. I spent a lot of time at Freeport - my parents started taking me there and to Islip when I was three and I kept going there every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday until I graduated from college, got married and moved to Rochester. My dad worked at the backgate for many years. Now I teach US history at a local college and sometimes wish I was 15 and at Freeport Stadium again - it was (and perhaps still is) my favorite place in the world. Of course, I also knew Casper B. and got to see him a few years ago at the body shop - not too long before he also died. Thanks again for the information about Joe. Do you know if any of his family is still on the island? p.s. It was a '33 Plymouth Coupe and I just bought one on e-bay and will be building my replica soon! --Previous Message--
