The taping of the Johnny Canales Show was really cool to watch. I got there early to get a front seat behind the VIP section. Before the taping began , 16 year-old Paula sang a few songs. She has opened up for Kumbia Kings and Frankie J. She has a beautiful voice like one of the Destiny Child singers.
After a long wait, Johnny Canales appears and people applaud. The audience were wearing the yellow ‘Save Ingleside” T-shirts and waving little American flags.
Johnny cued the audience on when to cheer and we were off. The first to perform was INZENDIO. Watch out for this group because they have of outstanding songs. Johnny gave the lead singer his famous “patada” for luck.
Next. HAPPY had us rolling in the aisles with his funny jokes. In the middle of a joke about drive-thrus, he said “I noticed that nobody laughed when I said ‘hamburger with sheece‘ I guess cuz you all are Hispanics and it sounded correct.”
Now it was time for JIMMY GONZALEZ Y EL GRUPO MAZZ. They performed a couple of their hits. There was a lull in the taping to give FREDDY FENDER time to get ready. Johnny gave a wonderful Intro, we cheered on cue, but no Freddy. He finally made it on stage and sang his country hits along with Jimmy Gonzalez.
Next came the speeches to save the base at Ingleside. Paula sang the national anthem like a pro. As the General was brought up on stage with all the dignitaries, Jimmy began singing “America, the Beautiful”. The Mayor gave the General the keys to the city and then the General gave a short speech.
Now it was back to taping the show again. OSCAR Y LA MAFIA took the stage before the taping started, but we couldn’t help cheering and yelling when we saw them. Then the camera rolled on Johnny with his Intro and we didn’t need a cue to yell our heads off. You can see my photos on La Gringa’s webpage. I was having so much fun taking pics that I didn’t even notice that David was missing! (He had a prior engagement in Houston that he couldn’t get out of.) Oscar ended the show on top of the big speakers. It was great!
How can anyone follow that act!? Well, BIG CIRCO did; and they did a pretty good job doing it. They looked like fire fighters with their nice red jumpsuits. They were wearing their trademark makeup and the keyboard player (el diablito) had flaming red spiked hair.
The taping was going on longer than what many expected but I was not going anywhere until it was completely over. JAIME Y LOS CHAMACOS were next and it was great to see them again. It has been awhile since I last saw Jaime because his hair had that salt and pepper look. But he still jumps like a Quinceniero!!! Ahhhuuuaaa!
