I thought NASA made it mandatory a while back. I agree, it should be required by every federation.A young man from Texas had a bar fall and fracture his eye socket in March at the AAU meet in Tulsa.Spotters were not paying attention at all.

: I spotted at a meet this past weekend and
: there was a near tragedy. An experienced
: lifter came to the bench opener with
: something he had done before. I am not sure
: of the bar weight, but it was decent. 500
: plus I guess.
:
: The guy came down with the weight and his
: left tricep tore off. Now it's just dead
: weight. It hit his chin, thankfully and we
: were able to catch it before it got his
: throat. I had my hands under the bar, as
: close as I could without touching. I could
: not have reacted any faster. Had it hit his
: throat and not his chin, my reaction would
: not have been fast enough.
:
: I think it's unacceptable that safety rails
: are not in place at every meet. Many meets
: are using chains for the squat, which is
: less dangerous than the bench in my opinion.
: The meet director is a good friend of mine
: and he is going to be using rails from now
: on.
:
: This was NOT a NASA meet. Opinions? Agree
: or disagree? I am new to spotting and
: loading so I am sure people have seen many
: things much worse, but this one stuck with
: me.
