I admit to being a bit underwhelmed as well. They didn't do a bad job, they did a decent one. It's just kinda impossible to live up to the expectations of the original.
The story, while movie-ish, is really nothing compared to vanilla sc. All the layers of intrigue and twists and turns, where are they? There is kinda only one. There's no great betrayal by Arcturus, no Kerrigan falling to the zerg, no Tassadar's great sacrifice into the overmind. There are so many awesome moments from SC1. Nothing that even comes close to those moments for me. Maybe it's because you don't interract with the other factions, get to touch it from their perspective. I'll chalk up that loss to blizzards need for $$ and 3 games on that one.
Also I think it's a function of the disjointed mission style. The missions are cool, and well planned out, but the overarching theme is so hollow. If you need almost a new story line every mission, that can be played in almost any order, its impossible to have the textured feel of a step by step narrative. Why give you the option of choosing your missions, if you end up going through them all anyways? Illusion of choice is not a benefit here.
The upgrade system is cool. With the zerg/toss research choices, you literally get to make a choice that can affect how you play the game. The point-click adventure style rooms are alright, gives you a little more interactivity than SC1 and only the mission briefings. They should have allowed you to make some dialogue choices in the different conversations though, so that it wasn't just "click on this guy over and over after each mission", illusion of choice thing again.
Multiplayer, no verdict yet. Won the first 5 placement matches, only got cursed at and my manhood questioned twice. Player community improvement?
