Sorry Don, this isn't new at all. Many centers in the US have been doing islet cell transplants for a few years. It's not as "promising" as one might think. Right now it has a very high re-transplant rate, and it takes on average 5 healthy pancreata to isolate enough cells to give to ONE person. As a KP recipient, I'd rather see 5 diabetics get transplanted than just one!! Just food for thought. Hopefully the isolation process can be refined so this precious resource isn't wasted.
