Posted by Jeanne on 5/6/2003, 9:27 pm, in reply to "Post Transplant" Depression is extremely common after transplant for many different reasons. If meds aren't helping with that, get her to a counselor. It really makes a difference. I can't stress that enough. If she can't afford one, the transplant center can sometimes help. This should also be brought up with the team because depressed people are often not as compliant. Everyone feels diferent after surgery. I felt pretty good after my kidney tx and walked every day. But I also took some pretty long naps every day. She would feel better if she walked a little. Force her if you can. Walk with her. At first I just walked as far as I could from one end of the first floor of my house to the other. It's important for healing and getting the use of those muscles back. Don't ask. Just go to her and tell her you're going to walk now. Any distance is fine. Pick a goal and help her meet it. Eventually you can lengthen the distance. Also talk to the team about this. Maybe they can extol the benefits of exercise in recovering from surgery. Just continue to support her. That's the best thing. She is probably overwhelmed by the changes in her life. A transplant can be scary. Let her talk openly and never tell her what she "should" be feeling. Jeanne
She's going to have some problems at first with the high drug dosages. Tremor, diarrhea, etc. She should tell her team about it but they might tell her to wait it out until the meds change. Anemia can cause her to feel tired. Talk to the doctors about foods that will help as well as medicine.
