The old advice used to be to clip the needle (or use a special tool) to eliminate the point. But since we are more cautious today about accidental needle sticks and infection, the standard thing today is just to drop the needle and syringe into a disposable plastic bottle, without recapping the needle (which raises risk of needle stick).
