Posted by John If you are pretty sure that you have been directly exposed, VIG (varicella immunoglobulin) can be given but there is a short window of opportunity, about 3 days, where it does any good at all. Also VIG is not risk free.

In general I agree: you should avoid contact with the primary patient, because the virus can br transmitted through the air. But secondary infection via another uninfected, immune person is pretty rare.
