How's the job search going? You asked how we coped with layoffs. When we were first married the first layoff was devastating--young, no money saved, and the economy was in bad shape. That's when Bill went to bartender school just to get a quick job. It turned out to be great--he tended bar by night and returned to college by day. I started my alterations business. The next layoff came because the owner of the company embezzled salaries, taxes and retirement funds. Bill was owed over 2 months salary. That made us ANGRY. The jerk embezzler declared bankruptcy before we could sue him in court, and the jerk got to keep his Porsche. Bill was working a second job part-time and I was working full time so the layoff wasn't as bad as others. The third layoff was when the insurance company Bill worked for (tech support) was bought out and the company closed. The economy was stronger then, and I was working part-time. Still, it took Bill about three months to get another job. Not fun. By then he was considered too experienced and over-qualified. Go figure. Let's say the net result is we both are always working at least two jobs, and I think we've forgotten how to relax. Don't let that happen to you!
I share your disillusionment with big companies. I also don't like working for the state. The current freeze on salaries is entering its 4th or 5th year. We haven't even received a COLA raise. Of course, we've both been assigned extra work becuase there's a hiring freeze, too, and people who quit aren't being replaced. Their work is just reassigned. I don't mean to sound whiney, but I think even if the economy improves the state will continue to take advantage of its workers. Maybe things are better where you are?
