Personally, calorie counting has never worked for me. Proper nutrition is about eating from different food groups (and not excluding any) so your body and system get the necessary nutrients. It's also about eating proper portions (no overeating at all -- which we're prone to do as a society), exercise, getting plenty of sleep, drinking lots of water.
There is no "calorie set point" that applies to all people. The amount of calories required depends on a lot of individual factors -- including your personal medical history, your height, the amount of exercise you get, your age, etc. This is why even with a smart and healthy diet plan in hand, I suggest anyone beginning a program to lose weight take the time to meet with their personal doctor to make sure they are going on a program that will benefit them at all levels and not harm them in any way. Losing weight needs to be done with the goal of overall health and not accomplished in a way that could harm you.
