The amount of calories required for your individual needs varies depending on a lot of factors -- including your general health, fitness level, age, current weight, etc. Along with all the useful information in the Just Stop Eating So Much! Book, I recommend anyone starting out on a healthier life plan (which includes taking off unhealthy excess weight) take time to visit their doctor and map out their personal needs that should be paid attention to. It's impossible to assign one number or one formula to millions of people. It's a matter of personal responsibility as well as paying attention to what works (or doesn't work) for your body. Along with reducing the portion sizes while increasing healthy food choices, we also need to pay attention to the amount of exercise we're getting and even the amount of water we're drinking. Add to this, necessary sleep, etc. It's a lot to think about, but well worth the time and effort.
For general information on calorie counting, you can click to these online resources:

But once again, these are general guidelines. I suggest taking a copy of Just Stop Eating So Much! to your doctor and determining your individual caloric needs if this is important to you.
Good luck with your efforts!
