Thanks for your additional thoughts, sharing and feedback, Joe. It’s appreciated by all of us Just Stoppers! and most of us can relate to what you’re going through. Personal health issues (including irritable bowel syndrome) certainly factor in to what choices you have when it comes to successful weight loss. This is one of the many reasons it’s important to involve your personal doctor or medical professional.
At the same time, you need to decide what’s important to you. The meat and potatoes or losing weight permanently? It’s all about setting goals and visualizing your success -- and then being willing to make a few sacrifices (Diet Coke, etc.) in order to achieve that success. As someone who likes to eat (which I am also), you might be interested to know that healthier food choices contain less calories and, therefore, can be consumed in greater quantities than calorie dense foods that have little nutritional value.
Also, unlike some, I believe what you eat does matter as much as caloric intake. When you eat healthy, your metabolism and body respond in kind. It does matter what you eat. Overloading your body with toxins (including the chemicals found in sodas) can lead to a slowed metabolism, hunger, depression and a general lethargy. What you eat really does matter.
Healthy food. Healthy portions. Water. Exercise. Rest. It’s simple math. But a tough thing to get started on to be sure (otherwise we’d all be thin).

Think about creating some goals that you can visualize and see if that motivates you.
Good luck, Joe -- and thanks again for all of your input!
