Thanks for your post, Joe. In this age of constant internet activity, your dilemma is one we all can relate to -- including myself.
There’s nothing wrong with eating and nothing wrong with snacking. You’re a tall guy and need nutrition, sustenance and food satisfaction. The trick is eating healthy foods and eating healthy portions. You knew that, right?
First of all, I suggest making sure that you’re drinking enough water. Often times, hunger is a sign that we’re thirsty. Water does fill you up and it’s also a great way to keep our metabolism functioning (along with our other body functions). Next time your stomach starts to growl, have some water and wait an hour. See if the hunger pain passes. You can drink water “plain” at room temperature or even add a little lemon juice to it. Your choice.
Next, have snacks ready that aren’t going to sabotage your weight loss efforts. You’ll find healthy snack options offered in the Just Stop Eating So Much! Book. I always suggest cutting these snacks up and making them “fancy.” Try adding a toothpick to them (for eating) or arranging them into a circle or some kind of design -- as if you were serving them at a restaurant. By making more of a big deal of the snacking, this will register with your brain and work on a subliminal level to tell you and your body that you’ve had a treat and now you don’t have to think about food anymore.
A few healthy snack options (which you likely know) are:
Carrots and Celery Sticks
Apple
Orange
Cashews (only once or twice a week)
If you have to eat, I suggest carrot and celery sticks. Keep them handy and available and munch on those. But do work on the “snacking habit” as well. Just because we want to eat, doesn’t mean we always should. Put a picture that inspires you near the computer screen. Maybe of an outfit you’d love to wear after you lose weight or of some other symbolic image that represents weight loss success.
As for that Diet Coke you’re “addicted” to, JUST SAY NO. There is nothing healthy or beneficial about diet soda, Joe. Think of each can as 12 ounces of chemicals that do nothing but confuse your body and your metabolism. And it’s a likely culprit in increasing your hunger pangs. No kidding. There is absolutely nothing beneficial about soda of any kind. I know that it’s tough to cut this kind of thing out. But you have to ask yourself how badly you want to accomplish goals. Just Stop! the Diet Coke intake. Replace it with water, green tea and black coffee (in moderation). It might take a few days to get used to not drinking it, but the payoff will be enormous!
I’d also love for you to get on that bike from time to time -- or even get out and walk some of those foothills you wrote about. Take an iPod with you with a favorite music mix. 30 minutes a day will do wonders. Of course, as always, I encourage you (and everyone) to check in with their doctor before starting any diet change or exercise routines. I say and write this a lot, but we don’t just want to look good, we want to FEEL good. We want total health. So taking time to check with a medical professional is always advised (and worthwhile).
Lastly, sometimes it’s good to be hungry. That means your body is using stored calories to function and that’s going to result in weight loss.
This is all a process. And the fact that you’re aware of this issue is a really good sign. Keep the faith and keep us posted. We’re all in this together!
