Hey Tom! I just listened to Gregg on Coast to Coast (Gregg, you have an amazing personality, and are made for radio!), and it inspired me to take a look.
I'm 24, soon to be 25, 5'4" and 220 lbs. November of 2006 I weighed 225lbs and became pregnant. Determined not to become one of those woman that BALLOONED drastically because I had a kid, I changed my eating habits to that more like a diabetic -- eating every 2-3 hours and reducing my sugar intake. It was pretty easy because I was doing it for my baby (Londyn)'s health. At the 4th month I dipped to 210lbs, and by month 7 of my pregnancy I weighed 220lbs. WIC tried to tell me I needed to be eating 4000 calories a day because losing weight was bad for the baby, but my OB/GYN was impressed with my weight loss and supported it. The reason I lost the weight was because I was actually eating more than I had before, but less calories overall (via vegetables).
After Londyn and I went home from the hospital, my mom completely ignored my desire to NOT have sugar introduced into my home -- she brought over a BlueBerry Buckle. I tried SO HARD to not eat it, and save it for Londyns dad, but I had a peice.
Back came the cravings for soda, sugar and all that jazz.
So, Londyn's 6 months old, and I'm larger than I've ever been (besides being pregnant with a 9lb13oz baby, lol), and still weigh 220 lbs. Probably a feat to be somewhat proud of, but before i was pregnant I wore a XL and size 15 jeans... now I wear 17/19 and a XXL. Its depressing. I know that if I don't change it now, I'll have a longer weigh to go in the future.
Tom, I commend your desire to lose weight, and I'm joining you in purchasing Gregg's book.
First step -- I'm trying out fruits and vegetables that I'd always told myself that I didn't like before. I'm having Salmon with Strawberry Sauce tomorrow, and Ratatouille the day after that.
A great source for recipes (in my opinion) is RecipeZaar.com -- click Recipe, and you can search by ingredients... and then by rating. There is nutritional information for each recipe too.
Good luck to you and your wife, Tom!
