I also think this song is holy because of the absolut personal intentions Ian had in mind while writing and performing this milestone of music. but on the other hand, cover versions of songs from Joy Division hold them in memory for potential new fans. I discovered Joy Division by the cover of "Love will tear us apart" from The Cure, was immediately ravished by the song and curious about more JD-songs. Now I'm an immoveable fan of Joy Division for ever.
