It's an odd question to ask. What is real about Joy Division? If you have been following them from the beginning, then the answer to that question should lie within you. What do they mean to you? I first heard the band in 1980. The first track I ever heard was Heart and Soul. It burned into me and that is the only way I can describe it. Lyrically, musically, psychologically burned right through me. It touched me in a not-so-gentle way, like a wake up call to my own psyche and the times that I was living through. It is deeply personal music. This is a band that transcended their genre completely. They put it all out there, naked and raw kinds of uncomfortable emotional stuff that people dream and think but rarely talk about and they didn't coat it with posturing. It was heartfelt. So you ask, what does this band mean? It means something different and very personal to everyone who is deeply affected by it.
