I had the great opportunity to see Joy Division perform in London in early 1980. The support act was Killing Joke, and I remember that Youth who looked lot like a dapper version of Sid Vicious playing bass so violently, I felt like I had been punched in the chest. Then Joy Division came on. There was no introduction to any of the songs and Curtis performed out of his skin. I was at the front of the audience, and I thought even then that he would not be possibly able to give that type of performance night after night without some kind of breakdown. It came as no surprise that Iggy Stooge was his idol. But Ig came from Detroit a study in urban toughness, Ian did not. So when I heard that he had taken his own life a few months later, I wasn't entirely surprised. It was also unsurprising that the final thing he heard was The Ig's sorrowful "The Idiot". Fast forward twenty seven years later, and the second album is reissued with the bonus of that magnificent live performance from February 1980. What a night and what a great band ! We won't see their likes again....
