Lyrics vs. Poetry

I've been doing some thinking about Ian's words and I guess I'm wondering if Ian wasn't in a band and was just a poet, how many of you would have found his work as profound as it is now? The reason I'm asking is because poetry seems kind of dead now since music is almost a prerequisite for people to listen to what you have to say. Anyone agree? Disagree?
