We were woken last Thursday morning (circa 5.00am (3rd November) by a black man (tallish and heavily built) ringing our door bell. He said he was a neighbour who owns the blue golf & has a wife and child. He explained that his wife (a midwife at the Whittington hospital) was at work and he was locked out of his house. He had been waiting for 3 hours for his brother to turn up with the key but he had recently met a new girlfriend and had apparently turned his mobile to voicemail & couldn't be contacted. He was very charming, very apologetic and quite convincing. I very, very stupidly let him into the house and allowed him to try to phone someone (I assume his brother) but he couldn’t get through. Somehow (amazingly) I ended up giving this person £40 for a taxi to Highgate, in order for him to get the front door key. He said his name was Paul (he told me as he walked out of the door and shook my hand) was soooo grateful and we would put the money through the letterbox later that day. Guess what, he must have forgotten where we live!
According to Bethnal Green Police Station no crime has been committed as I had allowed him into our house and given him the money. The moral of this storey is avoid answering your doorbell late at night (or early in the morning) but, if you have do, and the person claims to be a neighbour and his name is Paul, then suggest to him that he comes down to see me at number 1 Quilter.
